Orrery
The solar system is filled with the incredible and unexplainable. This toy sought to encapsulate that wonder in a solely mechanical product: an orrery. This orrery is a mechanical model of the universe from the Sun to Mars. I used measurements of rotational speeds to calculate gear ratios which would accurately represent the relative rotation of each planet.
This project demanded elements of mathematics, CAD modeling, and fabrication. I took pride in the industrial design of this orrery, because I sought to diverge from the more complex and inaccessible orreries of the past. I personally manufactured almost every component of the orrery, from the orbs and handle I turned on the lathe, to the bent aluminum arms, to the laser-cut gears, platforms, and shims.
