Skava: Plow & Salt Dispenser

in collaboration with ethan bradlow, jake fine, & greg robinov

The main function of the shovel is the displace accumulation, and the main function of snow salt is to unbind ice.  Yet, while their functions are inextricably linked, these tools have forever existed separately.  Skava combines the clearing ability of the shovel with the preventative care of the ice-melt dispenser for use by small-scale snow removal operations, such as hospital grounds, business parks, and community centers.

During this project, I engaged with several aspects of the product design process, including idea generation, customer research, user needs, product schematics, quality function development, CAD, design for manufacture, design for assembly, pricing analysis, and market positioning.  One of the great pleasures of this project was speaking with dozens of university groundskeepers to understand their extreme user needs and translating those into quantifiable engineering objectives.  I also enjoyed designing several plastic parts for injection molding, primarily the plow head.
